Konrad’s  all-encompassing career with the City of Los Angeles offered little in  the way of creative expression. However, the urge to express himself was  always just beneath the surface. The move from Los Angeles to Palm  Springs sparked his creative passion. The warmth, colors and the  vibrancy of the desert transformed his life. Though he lacked formal  training Konrad listened to his calling. “

Konrad’s  Urban Series, painted with multiple layers that form into a topography  of shapes, colors, textures and transparencies, reflects his years spent  in Los Angeles. He transforms onto canvas the sights, sounds, and chaos  of the urban terrain.  Konrad’s Poolside Series is more reflective of  his impressions of Palm Springs life. Organic shapes and textures appear  that reflect a more relaxed and playful expression.

An  award winning Palm Springs artist and resident, Konrad strives to  create powerful expressions when capturing and representing a simple  moment in life. “My work is not true to life visually, but it is exceedingly expressive of life.”

"I see my journey in Art as a continued source of pleasure and self expression.  My goal is that others can see in my work what is unique in my perceptions of inner and outer reality.  I also wish to connect to what is spiritual and universal in our collective human experience."

Johnson's interest in drawing and painting brought him to major in Art at Reedley Jr College, from which he received an Associate of Arts degree in Fine Arts in 1980.  From there he was accepted and studied for a year at what is now call the California College of the Arts in Oakland CA., majoring in Graphic Design as well as painting.  Life took him elsewhere with a B.A. in Theology (Catholic Seminary)  and a Masters in Social Work .

Although some art work was made in his working years, it was not till Johnson  retired in 2010 that he returned to his original interest in Painting and Drawing.

Studies include College of the Desert, The Art Academy of San Diego, and now here at the Desert Art Center in Palm Springs.

Subject matter ranges from Landscapes, Seascapes, Abstracts, Figurative and Portraiture.  Mediums include Acrylics, Oil, and various Mix Media and mark making approaches.  He is also experienced with Pastel Portraiture.

“I shut my eyes in order to see.” Paul Gauguin

Paintings allow me to transform the perspective of my inner world into an outer reality - making the invisible visible.

Nature inspires me to participate in a dance of life that plays out on the canvas. Gratitude and reverence for Creation sustains me.

Rating: 5/5 stars: Julianna is a masterful and intuitive teacher. She listens to me and my experiences, and is able to discern a plan that embodies my intentions. She enriches and expands my feelings of what I would like to pursue in my art. Her close follow-up and commentary of my work is invaluable in my development. I am grateful.  Melinda H.Curley
